Ask the Expert: Colorectal Screening

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month. With colorectal cancer ranking as the second most deadly cancer in the United States for both men and women, screenings can save lives. In addition, colorectal screening can assist physicians in the diagnosis of other diseases of the digestive tract.

Paul Savoca, MD, colorectal specialist, St. Charles Hospital, is board certified in both the surgical and non-surgical treatment of benign and malignant colon and rectal conditions. He completed his surgical residency at Yale University School of Medicine and a fellowship at the University of Minnesota. While in private practice, Dr. Savoca completed approximately 200 major colorectal surgeries annually. Dr. Savoca brings his expertise to St. Charles Hospital, where surgeons performs minimally invasive laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery, which reduces patients’ pain and allows them to return to full activity more quickly following surgery.

St. Charles Hospital Chefs Win First Place in Culinary Competition Between New York Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations

A team of chefs from St. Charles Hospital won first place in the sixth annual Big Apple Healthcare Culinary Challenge hosted by the Association for Healthcare Foodservice’s (AHF) Greater New York Chapter on Thursday, March 13, 2014. The St. Charles team was the only team from Long Island and one of only three teams from New York hospitals and healthcare organizations invited to participate in this live, timed cooking competition.

“I’m proud of our team’s success and happy to be a member of the AHF’s Greater New York chapter,“ said Stephanie Giraulo, director, Nutritional Services, St. Charles Hospital. “Our chefs work hard every day to bring our patients, employees and guests fresh, high quality food and hotel-style room service, so it is an honor to be recognized for our abilities and teamwork.”

Minimally invasive procedure for early to mid-stage osteoarthritis provides faster recovery and more natural feeling knee post-surgery

St. Charles Hospital announced that it is the first and only hospital on Long Island to offer MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing.  MAKOplasty® is a minimally invasive treatment option for adults living with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis (OA) that has not yet progressed to all three compartments of the knee.  MAKOplasty is less invasive than traditional total knee surgery and is performed using RIO®, a highly advanced, surgeon controlled robotic arm system.

ST. CHARLES HOSPITAL TO OFFER FREE PEDIATRIC DENTAL CARE ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7

St. Charles Hospital will offer free dental screenings, cleanings and fluoride treatments  during the hospital’s Give Kids A Smile Day celebration, Friday, February 7,  8:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. St. Charles Hospital’s celebration is in conjunction with the  American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile Day, a national campaign to promote good oral health in children who do not have access to dental care.

Donation to St. Charles Hospital Supports Dental Care Access for Underserved

St. Charles Hospital will receive dental care product donations, valued up to $25,000, from Henry Schein Cares, the global social responsibility program of Henry Schein, Inc.  St. Charles will receive the donations over a two year period and utilize the materials in its Stephen B. Gold Dental Clinic, which provides preventative and comprehensive dental care for developmentally and physically disabled individuals as well as the general population in eastern Suffolk County.
